Fires for future

River Run Lodge at Strathblane provided the perfect grounds for collaboration between interstate community group Koori Country Cultural Fire, patrula nayri (Fire good) Traditional Fire Workshops, South East Tasmanian Aboriginal Corporation (SETAC) and Dover and South Action Group, all centred around using fire to protect the future on Sunday, October 9.

In a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, Koori Country Cultural Fire and its Firesticks Future crew were welcomed to the Huon Valley’s far south in preparation for the collaborative fire practices workshops held on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Founding director of the Koori Country Cultural Fire group Den Barber said that the day and workshops were part of a move to bring young people to the foreground of protecting the land and carrying on traditional practices.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to come down and share knowledge, knowledge is only powerful when you share it,” Mr Barber said.

“The young people are our future and if we don’t pass this knowledge down to them, these practices and ways of caring for the land will die off.

“Learning how to use fire to care for our country is vitally important to this land and joining forces with Jason from patrula nayri will assist in making this a strong practice locally.”
