Franklin is located in the Huon Valley on the western bank of the Huon River, 8 km south of the busy shopping and service centre of Huonville.

The vast forests of Tasmania's south west behind Geeveston provide $40 million in revenue annually. Established in the Huon River is largest aqua cultivation of salmon in Australia. The current value is close to $100 million per year, which is being expanded with a new factory site at Huonville. Other industries include apple growing worth in excess of $20 million, sheep and cattle grazing, as well as cherry orchards.

The eastern side of the river has seen the rise of successful grape plantations, which have won State Tourism Awards.
